Easterling – Aruba Carnival
Aruba Carnival, February 1964. The island is a simmering melting pot of culture. Dutch people are stomping around in clogs, Afro-Caribbean, young, old; everyone is celebrating. What a party. Also, note the blatant sponsorship and swag from our good friends in the tobacco industry. Lucky Strike and Kool are still getting their money’s worth, via this video. Well played.
There was no sounds with any of the footage from the Easterling adventure and this was an occasion that I really wish had some audio recorded. I spent a lot of time synching up the music to this piece and I feel like it captures the vibe pretty well. Shout out to my father, Al Forsythe who filmed this and all of the Easterling footage. Check out the shots of him standing against the flow of the parade. That took guts. He saw the parade and got amongst it. I had to edit out a few moments where the steel drum players got angry and tried to waive him back onto the sidewalk. Nope!
This post is a thread from the main story of Easterling, a voyage through the Caribbean Sea, Panama Canal, to the Galapagos Islands and Tahiti in a 34’ sloop. Watch full video.
